Lead Engineer (WordPress) At AgileEngine, we create award-winning software for Fortune 500 brands and trailblazing startups across 17+ industries. We're looking for a Lead Engineer to own the technical direction of our WordPress platform, collaborating with internal and external partners, and drive the evolution of platform architecture and back-end infrastructure. Key Responsibilities: - Own the technical direction for our WordPress platform and lead the development and implementation of new features in collaboration with internal and external partners; - Contribute to and guide the evolution of platform architecture and back-end infrastructure; - Enforce coding best practices and ensure performance, security, and scalability of our WordPress implementation; - Collaborate with designers, front-end engineers, and product managers to plan and execute development work; - Provide technical leadership and mentorship to internal engineers to support their growth in WordPress development; - Lead code reviews, documentation efforts, and continuous improvement processes. Requirements: - 5+ years of commercial experience; - Deep understanding of WordPress and PHP fundamentals, with a strong portfolio of complex or large-scale projects; - Experience designing scalable back-end systems and implementing custom plugins and themes; - Proven ability to lead and influence technical decisions across teams or organizations; - Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs and familiarity with GraphQL APIs; - Experience with headless or decoupled WordPress implementations; - Familiarity with modern JavaScript (e.g., ESNext, JSX) and experience building custom Gutenberg blocks using block.json and React; - Prior experience supporting high-traffic enterprise websites; - Skill in debugging, performance optimization, and local development workflows; - Experience working with testing tools in WordPress, such as phpunit; - Proficient in version control tools such as Git/GitHub; - Upper-Intermediate English level. Nice to Have: - Experience with WordPress VIP hosting infrastructure; - Experience working with WordPress multi-sites; - Experience with modern CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows; - Exposure to AWS cloud services and modern infrastructure tools; - Previous experience in a tech lead or staff engineer role; - Contributions to the WordPress community (open source, events, etc.); - Experience working in digital media or publishing environments; - Familiarity with front-end frameworks like React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
