Deniz defines first aid as “medicine-free applications performed at the scene of an accident or life-threatening situation, with available resources, without the need for medical equipment, in order to save life or prevent the situation from getting worse until the help of healthcare personnel is provided” and lists the main purposes of first aid as ensuring the continuation of life, preventing the situation from getting worse and facilitating recovery. Risks of Unconscious First Aid Deniz emphasizes that first aid should only be performed by certified individuals. First aid performed unconsciously can have serious consequences. “First aid should be performed by individuals who have received certification in this regard. Otherwise, interventions performed without knowledge or with hearsay may lead to a worsening of the patient or injured person’s condition, permanent disabilities, and even death,” he warns. Proper First Aid Saves Lives Deniz, who states that first aid performed correctly and consciously saves lives, says, “With correct first aid, the current condition of sick or injured people is prevented from deteriorating until they are transferred to a health institution. In addition, first aid performed correctly and consciously ensures that the illness or disability heals more quickly in the future.” Deniz also emphasizes that first aid training should be received from an educational institution authorized by the Ministry of Health. How to Apply First Aid Properly? In order for first aid to be applied effectively, the protection, notification and rescue steps must be followed carefully. Duygu Deniz explains the details of these stages as follows: Protection: The aim is to prevent the consequences of illness or injury from worsening by evaluating the scene. The most important step is to identify the dangers at the scene and create a safe environment. In this way, both the first aider and the patient or injured person are protected from secondary accidents. Reporting: The incident or accident should be reported to the necessary aid organizations as soon as possible by phone or other means of communication. In Turkey, in all cases requiring first aid, communication should be provided via the 112 emergency telephone number. Systematic reporting will increase efficiency. Things to consider when calling 112: You should stay calm or have a calm person call you. The questions asked by the 112 center must be answered clearly. When providing exact location and address information, the name of a street or a well-known place close to where the incident occurred should be stated. Rescue (Intervention): At the scene, intervention for patients or injured people should be carried out quickly but calmly. Rescue stages should be followed carefully: The patient's/injured person's condition is evaluated (ABC) and priority interventions are determined. The patient/injured's fears and concerns are eliminated. People who will help the sick/injured person are organized. Necessary interventions are made with the patient's/injured's personal means to prevent the patient's/injured's condition from getting worse. The intervention is performed by protecting the patient's head-neck-body axis. If there is bleeding, bleeding control should be performed. Fractures are treated on site. The patient/injured person is not allowed to see his/her wound. The intervention is performed without moving the patient/injured person. The patient/injured is kept warm. The patient/injured person should not be left alone until the ambulance arrives. Unless the patient/injured person is in serious or life-threatening condition, they should never be moved.
