Job Summary: The Software Engineering Manager II is responsible for overseeing multiple software development teams, managing projects, and driving the technical direction to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions. This role requires strong leadership skills, hands-on technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to align software development with business objectives. The Manager II will mentor and guide engineers, manage resources, and ensure software development processes adhere to industry best practices. The Engineering Manager works closely with the Product Manager to ensure delivery of business requirements and user stories that provide clear direction for the engineers to deliver an exceptional customer experience. While the Product Manager drives the commercial and customer focused vision of the product, the Engineering Manager is responsible for the quality of the product code, architecture and technical implementation. Key Responsibilities: Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and coach a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Conduct regular performance evaluations , set individual and team goals, and provide ongoing feedback to team members. Drive talent acquisition efforts, including recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new software engineers. Project & Resource Management: Manage and oversee multiple development projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and meet business requirements. Collaborate with product managers, UX/UI designers, and stakeholders to define project objectives, scope, and timelines. Allocate resources effectively, balancing team capacity and business priorities to ensure optimal productivity and timely delivery. Technical Guidance & Architecture: Provide hands-on technical leadership and direction to the engineering team, guiding architectural decisions and technology choices. Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices, and help integrate them into the development process. Review and contribute to codebases as needed, maintaining high-quality standards for performance, scalability, and maintainability. Software Development Process Management: Implement and improve software development processes (Agile, Scrum, Kanban) to ensure efficient workflows and successful project delivery. Promote DevOps practices such as continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD), and automated testing to improve development efficiency. Ensure the use of version control systems (e.g., Git, Bitbucket ), issue tracking (e.g., Jira, Trello ), and project management tools to track progress and transparency. Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as a liaison between engineering teams and key stakeholders, including product managers, business leaders, and clients, ensuring alignment between technical solutions and business goals. Translate business requirements into technical specifications, guiding teams to develop solutions that meet customer needs while maintaining technical feasibility and performance. Communicate project updates, risks, and issues to stakeholders in a clear and timely manner, managing expectations and ensuring transparency throughout the development process. Quality Assurance & Code Review: Ensure adherence to code quality standards , conducting code reviews to maintain a clean, scalable, and efficient codebase. Drive the implementation of unit testing, integration testing , and other quality assurance practices to catch defects early and ensure software reliability. Collaborate with quality assurance (QA) teams to ensure the smooth handoff of code and thorough testing before production releases. Risk Management & Problem Solving: Identify and mitigate risks related to project timelines, resources, and technology, ensuring proactive solutions to avoid project delays. Resolve technical challenges and bottlenecks, applying creative problem-solving skills to address both short-term needs and long-term technical debt. Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying process inefficiencies and technical gaps, and leading initiatives to address them. Budget & Cost Management: Manage the engineering team’s budget, ensuring efficient use of resources, tools, and technologies to meet project goals. Work with senior leadership to forecast resource needs and project costs, balancing quality and efficiency while remaining within budget constraints. Skills & Qualifications: Technical Expertise: Strong hands-on experience with software development in languages such as C#, GoLang, Python, JavaScript or related technologies. Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP ), microservices architecture , and modern development frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Node.js ). Deep understanding of software design patterns, algorithms, and data structures . Familiarity with DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD pipelines , automated testing , and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes ). Leadership & Management Skills: Proven track record of managing software engineering teams of 10 or more engineers, with experience in both people and project management. Excellent leadership, mentorship, and coaching skills, with a focus on career development and building high-performing teams. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and with non-technical stakeholders. Agile Methodology Experience: Solid experience with Agile and Scrum methodologies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and sprint retrospectives. Familiarity with Agile tools like Jira, Confluence, and other project management software. Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills: Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues and develop innovative solutions. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment while ensuring on-time delivery of solutions. Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology , or a related field. 5+ years of experience in software development, with at least 1 + years in a management or leadership role . Certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) , Certified Agile Leader (CAL) , or Project Management Professional (PMP) are a plus.
