Class Definition NOW HIRING LATERAL TRANSFERS [EXPERIENCED LAW ENFORCEMENT (POST-CERTIFIED)] as well as new applicants GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To protect and provide police services and general security at the State Capitol, annexes, properties contained therein, and adjacent state buildings, grounds, premises and designated state properties against the hazards of trespass, theft, fire, and damage; to maintain order; to ensure safety and security of the public, employees, and property; and to perform related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a superior Rhode Island Capitol Police officer, with assignments and instructions received in detail or outline form. Work may be reviewed during and after shifts for efficiency and methods. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Usually none. Illustrative Examples of Work Performed Protect and provide police services and security at the State Capitol and related properties against hazards. Maintain order on premises. Provide safety, security, and protection for the public, employees, and property. Patrol the State Capitol and grounds to detect and prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and property defacement. Preserve peace, make arrests when necessary, prevent trespassing and nuisances. Coordinate evacuations during emergencies. Conduct security checks, operate security equipment, and restrict unauthorized access. Assist in developing security procedures and respond to emergencies, including providing first aid and CPR. Gather intelligence, conduct threat assessments, and investigate incidents. Interact with the public, provide information, and manage traffic and parking. Maintain security of buildings, pass on instructions, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Prepare reports and perform related duties. Required Qualifications For Appointment Refer to Section Two for POST-certified requirements. Section 1: Knowledge, Skills, and Capacities Knowledge of police tactics and security procedures, ability to respond independently to threats, deal courteously with the public, keep records, analyze emergency situations, and develop effective actions. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED; successful completion of Rhode Island Capitol Police Training Academy. Special Requirements Physically qualified (medical certificate) Background check Psychological evaluation Firearms qualification Capitol Police training Valid driver's license CPR/First Aid certification every two years Section 2: Post-certified Required Qualifications Candidates with POST certification (from Rhode Island Municipal, State Police, Providence Police, or equivalent) must complete specific tests and evaluations, including physical fitness, background, psychiatric, firearms recertification, and medical exams. They will have less seniority if hired concurrently with non-POST candidates during the same academy.
