We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-first senior technologist passionate about Linux, looking to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you'll enjoy working with some of the best in the industry at Canonical. Job Summary The IS team maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, supporting over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you'll drive operations automation in our private and public clouds, utilizing open source infrastructure as code tools, CI/CD practices, and Canonical's automation products. You will also contribute to product improvements by providing feedback, bug reports, and collaborating on design and implementation with other teams. You will be part of a global team supporting each other to deliver excellent services to our company, customers, and the Ubuntu community. Responsibilities include Leading automation and Gitops initiatives as a technical lead within your team Collaborating with IS architects to align solutions with architecture vision Designing and architecting services as products for internal use Developing infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation, and refining IaC processes Automating software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds Maintaining operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure Enhancing troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance monitoring skills, using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch Supporting and collaborating with global engineering, operations, and support teams Focusing on larger projects and automating manual tasks during dedicated development time Sharing expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work Handling critical escalations with final responsibility Required skills and experience A modern approach to hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code across clouds A product-oriented mindset focused on developing products rather than just solutions Extensive Python development experience, especially with large projects Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure via code Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases Hands-on experience managing enterprise Linux servers Deep understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field Effective communication skills in English (email, chat, video, in-person) Strong troubleshooting skills from kernel to web, with a collaborative attitude Flexibility and quick learning ability Motivated by dynamic environments Comfortable working in distributed teams Passionate about open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian What we offer Distributed work environment with biannual in-person team sprints USD 2,000 annual learning and development budget Annual compensation review and performance bonuses Recognition rewards, holiday leave, and parental leave Wellness programs and support services Opportunities to travel and meet colleagues in new locations About Canonical Canonical is a pioneering open source technology company, known for publishing Ubuntu, a key platform for AI, IoT, and cloud.
